You just got a brand new iPad, peeled off the protective plastic and connected your iCloud account to download all your apps, music, photos and other settings. The iPad battery comes partially charged, but the iPad isn’t at 100% battery power right out of the box. How long should you charge your iPad the first time before you can start enjoying all those great apps?

This might sound obvious, but I suggest waiting for the battery indicator to reach 100%

How long does an iPad take to charge?

With the new fast chargers, a new iPad will reach full charge in about an hour. It will take varying amounts of time on future charges depending on how low the battery is.

Use your iPad while it’s charging

It’s totally safe to use your iPad while it charges the first time. Take the wall adapter out, connect the cable, and let the iPad charge while you use it.

  • Configure WiFi while it charges
  • Browse the app store to find and download your favorite apps
  • Play movies and music

Anything you might want to do works while the iPad is connected to the charger. It won’t charge as quickly if you do this. Some power is diverted to your activity, but you also don’t need to wait for the charge to complete.

Charge while you sleep

If you go to bed for the night before charging completes, just leave the iPad on the charger overnight. You will wake up to a full charge. That first time iPad charge is out of the way and you’ll be able to take it where ever you go.

Aim to keep the battery above 20% the next time you charge. It reduces iPad battery life to drain the battery to zero frequently. When the battery gets to about 30-40%, plug in your iPad and charge it to help prolong the battery life. The iPad has excellent battery life and easily lasts through a very busy day of usage, so have no fear of losing your iPad mid-day after making sure it’s charged.
